Kypseli, Athens’ most populous district, is a vibrant multicultural area that faces significant urban challenges due to its high density. Hence, the district faces various throwbacks of urban environment such as lack of public space, heavy traffic congestion, limited green areas etc. The city taking into consideration these challenges focuses on the improvement of quality of life in the area with various interventions.
The dense fabric of apartment blocks and narrow streets exacerbates heat and reduces air quality.
Historically home to migrant and underprivileged communities, the area requires inclusive strategies to foster engagement.
While the Municipal Market is a cultural hub, the surrounding energy and mobility infrastructure needs modernization to meet climate goals.
BLUEPRINT aims to release these tensions by uniting stakeholders to address energy efficiency and mobility through the lens of social innovation.
The intervention centers on the Municipal Market of Kypseli as a catalyst for district-wide transformation.
🏛️ Climate resilience lighthouse: renovate the Municipal Market with efficient energy systems such as EV chargers and community energy-sharing platforms to serve as a prototype for urban resilience.
🚲 15-minute city mobility: redesign the district for better pedestrian and cycling access with the engagement of local entrepreneurs, grassroots organizations, and residents to co-design an accessible and sustainable urban neighborhood
⚡ Energy community development: leverage digital tools and public forums to co-create solutions for energy efficiency and mobility, ensuring diverse community voices shape the district’s transformation
🔋 EV infrastructure integration: installing electric vehicle chargers and smart energy systems to support the transition to green mobility.
🤝 Grassroots-led sustainability: partner with local activist groups (e.g., “Kypseli mas”) and businesses to co-design interventions that align with the neighborhood’s unique identity.
